Time to Hibernate

Five of the Best Natural Materials to Bed Down in this Winter

Happy family concept. Feet of father, mother and four children in colorful knitted socks on white bed. Family sleeping together.

Winter should be filled with long blissful walks on a crisp day, followed by a  roast dinner and cuddling up beside a roaring log fire.  When it’s cold outside there’s no better time to create a snug and comforting sleep sanctuary inside; somewhere to hide away from the winter chill.  And we always choose natural and organic materials to stay cosy. They’re far superior to synthetics in terms of how they affect the body during sleep.  Natural fibres and fillings such as cotton, goose down, silk and flannelette will actually help to regulate your body temperature as you sleep, keeping you warm in winter and cool in the summer.  They’re also breathable and allow ventilation that draws moisture away, which makes for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Here’s our pick of the top five:

Flannelette

A chic and snug option for winter bedding, flannelette is currently enjoying a revival in UK homes.  Loosely spun fibres produce a fluffier texture to the fabric so it’s velvety soft to sleep on. This also has an insulating effect, traps warm air and provides extra heat for those who feel the cold. Where flannelette may appear thicker, it’s actually very light weight, plus it can be washed frequently with a reduced risk of shrinkage, so it’s ideal for children’s rooms. Like this sounds of this super soft natural fabric? Try our Stowe Brushed Organic Cotton Bed Linen

Silk

It’s advisable to opt for a higher tog duvet when temperatures tumble; a 10.5 or 13.5 tog rating will provide the extra warmth needed in the cold weather.  And it is possible to up the tog rating without feeling weighed down with a natural silk floss filling that continually adjusts to your body and the ambient temperature of the room. Silk filled duvets drape lightly over the body and are luxurious, light and thin. Try our Silk Winter Duvet.

Alpaca Wool

Alpaca fibres are naturally anti-allergic and can be used to kerb the effects of common allergies such as asthma which can worsen in winter due to the prevalence of colds and flu.  Made from hollow fibres, Alpaca wool has the same temperature regulating quality as many natural fibres.

Our Anti-Allergy Organic Alpaca Duvet Collection is handmade using unique stitching techniques for maximum airflow, this organic duvet is completely free from chemicals for a healthy, natural sleep environment.

Angora

The fluffy surface texture of Angora wool produces unrivalled luxury and softness.  It’s revered by knitters who refer to this extra fluffiness as the halo. The Angora fibre has a hollow core so it’s cosier and lighter than lambswool.

Try our Lambswool and Angora Throws – Blended with lambswool this lustrous textured Monaco throw is available in a vivid punchy pink along, soft blues, greys and cream.

Or the reversible Newbury Lambswool and Angora range gives even more options for changing up interiors.

 Goose Down

Natural down can be very lightweight.  A luxurious goose down duvet is an investment for those who love sleep without the feeling of too much weight on them – large clusters of down trap air and cover the body evenly and lightly.

Create a Cosy Bedroom This Winter

There’s nothing like feeling tucked up in the warm when it’s cold and wet outside and a few luxurious touches can quickly turn your bedroom into a warm, cosy sanctuary.

Now that the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in it’s the perfect time to give your bedroom a winter makeover.

Cosy seasonal interiors bring to mind images of roaring log fires and while not all of us are lucky enough to have a working fireplace in our bedrooms, there are other ways to achieve a similar effect.

Try placing candles around the room on all the surfaces, at different heights, and watch as the lights flicker and the room glows. Our porcelain tealight holders have wintry and festive cut-out shapes to send light around your room, or try the tangled ceramic holders with heart, star and butterfly shapes for year-round use.

A set of fresh white organic cotton sheets can make your bed look more inviting than ever – you’ll just have to try to resist until bedtime. A snug new snow goose luxury down 13.5 tog duvet combined with a luxury mattress enhancer will make sure your bed is warm and cosy, no matter how far the temperature plunges.

Once the bed linen is in place, add a touch of luxury with a throw or a blanket – and nothing is softer than our lambswool angora blankets, which come in a range of colours. Go for winter white if you want to continue the crisp, clean effect from the bedding, or pick a soft shade such as mink or pale latte to add a touch of colour with a high class finish.

For those extra cold nights – or just because it’s a little treat – why not get a fabulously soft lamb’s wool hot water bottle? Our range of colours includes dove grey and biscuit, which will coordinate perfectly with your lambswool angora blanket. Tuck the hot water bottle under your duvet a short while before you get into bed to warm the cotton through, or place it under your pyjamas or nightdress so you’re warm as soon as you get into bed.

No matter what the size or design of your bedroom, a few simple touches like these can help you to make it a real haven from the elements so you always have somewhere to rest and relax, ready to face whatever the winter throws at you.

A Guide to Making Your Bedroom a Cosy Sanctuary for the Winter

With winter fast approaching, how do you create a cosy sanctuary in your bedroom?

If you want to get the optimum night’s sleep from sleeping in a slightly cooler room, you will need to work just that bit harder to keep yor body at the optimum temperature in bed during those cold winter’s nights.   This is where The Fine Cotton Company’s superb range of luxury, organic and natural bedding and bed linen can really help you.

It’s all about layering – start from the bottom with your bed and layer it up for your optimum luxury, organic sleeping experience.

Start with a really good mattress enhancer.   A good mattress enhancer will give you many benefits, such as added support, greater comfort as you sleep, and will help to keep you cosy and warm.   It will also help to protect your mattress, thus lengthening its life significantly. The Fine Cotton Company has an excellent range of mattress enhancers or toppers – revel in the opulence of a Silk Filled Mattress Topper .   Silk keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer and these amazing silk mattress enhancers will give a soft, luxurious feel to your mattress.   They also create a healthier sleeping experience for you as they are naturally hypoallergenic, making them ideal for allergy sufferers, and also help to regulate your body temperature.   Or you could opt for the simplicity of the ‘Luxury Cotton Mattress Protector’ and sink into the soft comfort of its 100% natural cotton warmth.

The next layer that you need to look at is the sheet that goes over the mattress enhancer.   The best sheet to get is deep fitted sheet in the correct size for your bed.   This ensures that the sheet won’t ping off during the night, interrupting your precious sleep.   To enhance your warmth and cosiness, choose flannelette as the material for your fitted sheet.   The Fine Cotton Company’s ‘Stowe’ range offers fitted sheets in soft 100% organic cotton that has been lightly brushed to give a very warm and comfortable finish.   Guaranteed to keep you toasty on a cold winter’s night!

Maybe the most important layer is the next one, which is the duvet.   Choosing the correct duvet is all important when it comes to keeping you warm during the colder months. The weight, softness and warmth of a duvet will depend on its tog rating and filling, and the higher your tog rating the warmer you will be! The Fine Cotton Company only stocks natural duvets as they are very durable and naturally breathable, and natural filled duvets also have very efficient thermal properties.   In the winter, depending on how warm your home is,  you will probably need to have a duvet that is between 12.0 – 13.5 tog to keep you snug. Choose a Pure Silk Duvet from The Fine Cotton Company for light and luxurious snuggling throughout the winter months, or invest in the ultimate luxury of a Snowgoose Down Duvet , where you can luxuriate in the softest 100% Snowgoose down originating from the Northern Territories of Canada.   They are exceptionally light and super warm, and have a lavish 50% silk and 50% cotton 440 threadcount cover. All the duvets in the Fine Cotton Company’s range have matching pillows , so snuggle your head down into one of these amazingly supportive and cosy silk or goose down pillows.

To add to your warmth and cosiness, put a cosy, brushed cotton ‘ Stowe’ duvet cover onto your duvet. If you still feel that you will not be warm and toasty enough, The Fine Cotton Company has a wonderful collection of throws to choose from.   Make your selection from the soft, pure organic fleece of the Hampton throw, or really indulge yourself and savour the supremely soft luxury of the fringed pure cashmere ‘Henley’ throw

So now that you have set up your bedroom to ensure a wonderful night’s sleep on a cold, winter night, and successfully layered your bed with the help of The Fine Cotton Company, all that you need to do is snuggle down under your duvet with that steaming mug of hot chocolate that we promised you earlier.

Wishing you many wonderful, long, cosy nights of sleep throughout the winter from everyone at The Fine Cotton Company
