Brooklyn Summer Bed Linen

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy new beginnings. It gives the best avenue for you to participate in the rebirth of the Earth. It’s as if everything that has been happening for the past year is being cleansed, and the whole world is being given a fresh new start. New flowers blossom to reinvigorate nature’s colours, and the trees all grow a little greener. The environment tries to pick itself up from any issues in the past, and no matter how dark and dusty a place usually is, spring gives it that one little annual boost.

Invite spring into your home sweet home

Don’t leave spring outside where it can only be enjoyed far from home. Invite it into your own home, so that the freshness you can expect from outside would enter your house, too. Let the cleanliness reflect within your home so that you can enjoy your very own new beginning. Imitate the events outside your door and copy them within your walls to let yourself enjoy the spring brightness even within the coolness and comfort of your very own home.

Creating a blank slate to work with

Before buying any products, your first step would be to clear out your old linen. If you have any bedding and sheets that are close to falling apart, get rid of them and try to find new sheets. Look for sheets, bedding, pillowcases and throws that will represent the brightness of spring and the freshness of new beginnings. This is your opportunity to splurge on new things: if you want some new furnishings, buy them and enjoy their novelty.

The Fine Cotton Company’s top buys to make your home just like spring

Make sure that all of your buys are of light, airy colours. Don’t use really deep colours that may dampen the light feeling of spring. Put enough colour to make the room interesting but not too much to make it overwhelming.

Crisp white bed linen, colourful throws, plush new towels and a light bathrobe can be the first items to build into your new furnishings.

Spring is all about new days. You have every opportunity now to create a whole new room, to make something different from what you had last year. Take this chance to give your room a makeover from something old and reminiscent of last year to something exciting and ready for this year.

Open your windows wide and let the spring air flow through your home sweeping out the winter. It’s so true that most people feel the need to do a thorough ‘Spring Clean’ to get rid of the stale air and dust and put the dark winter nights behind them.

Preparing your bedroom for Spring is all about clearing out the old, cleaning any dust away and then it’s time to introduce into your bedroom beautiful, soft 100% organic cotton bed linen, a lighter weight duvet and new pillows for that refreshed spring feeling.

A great place to start getting the bed updated is at the base and work up to the top of the bed.

  1. Take off your sheets, mattress protectors and valance and if possible vacuum the mattress, divan base and under the bed. Wash any bed linen at 60°C to kill any dust mites. If you’re looking at replacing your valance, the Tuck Top Valance makes it quick and easy – in tests it took less than 1 minute to put it in place and 17 seconds to remove! And that’s with just 1 person and without lifting the mattress at all
  2. Change your mattress enhancer (if you have one). Going into Spring and Summer is all about keeping cool. There are different options – Silk is great for all year round cool; Wool and Alpaca are brilliant for temperature control; Duck Down and Goose Down give a soft blissful feel to your mattress.
  3. What type of sheets do you like to sleep on? Choose from Percale for a crisp, cool finish or the silky feel of Sateen. Check to depth of your mattress and choose an extra deep fitting sheet to prevent the bottom sheet pinging off in the night.
  4. Choosing a duvet cover is all about personal taste. For ease and flexibility, choose bed linen fabrics in white so your bedroom accessories, cushions and throws, can ring the changes,
  5. Do you need to change your duvet? Throughout the winter you’ve probably had a 12 or 13.5 Tog so now you may want to switch to a 9.0 Tog for the Spring and then 4.5 Tog for the Summer.
  6. To finish off your bed and just in case the night is chilly, use a throw or blanket.

Here at The Fine Cotton Company we have wonderful, luxurious ranges of 100% cotton bed linen, including hotel collections Roma, Brooklyn and Capri as well as our Timeless Classics collections of Vermont, Lille and Seville.

Getting Your Bed ready for Autumn

There’s a bit of a chill in the air and it seems to be getting darker slightly earlier – Autumn is on its way.

We’ve been rather spoiled this summer with great weather for most of us. It’s now time to prepare your bed for Autumn.

It’s always good to start at the base and work up.

  1. Take off your sheets and valance and if possible vacuum the mattress and divan base. You may want to look at our TuckTop Valance – in tests it took less than 1 minute to put it in place and 17 seconds to remove! And that’s without lifting the mattress at all
  2. Check your mattress topper (if you have one). Summer was all about keeping cool; Autumn is about keeping at the right temperature – not too hot but not too cold.
There are different options – Silk is great for all year round; Wool and Alpaca are brilliant for temperature control; Duck Down and Goose Down can make you feel like you’re cocooned in a state of bliss!
  3. Are your sheets the best for you? Our crisp cotton percale sheets are beautiful but some people love the warmer feel of the sateen or brushed cotton flannelette. Make sure you choose an extra deep fitting sheet at there’s nothing worse than your bottom sheet pinging off in the night. Think about a duvet cover in the fabric you love so you’ll feel nice and cosy when you get into bed.
  4. Do you need to change your duvet? You may have been using a 4.5 Tog duvet through the summer. Generally a 9.0 Tog duvet is a better option for the Autumn.
  5. Layering! To finish off your bed, it’s a good idea to layer with a throw or blanket. If you’re too hot, the blanket can be put to one side.

Bedroom Colours: How Do You Sleep?

Room colour does influence your mood and set the tone for your living environment. Therefore it’s important to choose a bedroom décor that will help you relax and induce sleep.

Creativity

Orange expands your thinking. It reduces self-consciousness and allows you to express yourself with confidence. Use it in your home when you want to feel younger. It is the colour of laughter and celebration.

Order

Deep blue encourages efficiency. It will purify your thinking, so you can cut through the clutter and discover what is most important in your life. It helps you integrate the big picture with the little picture. Wear dark blue when you need to make a decision.

Calm

Blue gives a sense of peace. It dissolves tension and promotes tranquillity. Light blue especially brings ease into the home and harmony into relationships. Wearing or surrounding yourself with it helps calm aggressive tendencies and eliminates discord. Those with bedrooms this colour tend to get the best rest – nearly eight hours a night – and wake feeling happy and positive.

Energy

Bright red will fortify you. It is a stimulant. It promotes courage and fearlessness. Use this color when you want to increase self-confidence. But too much red can make you feel overly excited or agitated. A little goes a long way.

Concentration

Yellow increases your focus. It is known for enhancing intelligence and mental agility. It can help stimulate conversation and clarify thoughts. People sleeping in rooms decorated in calm colours, such as yellow, blue or green, received the best night’s sleep.

Health

Green is also the colour of healing. It represents nourishment and helps steady the body, balancing your equilibrium and encouraging stability. Use it to rejuvenate yourself, to promote physical and emotional well-being. Green and yellow are also winners, with those choosing these colours clocking up roughly seven hours and 40 minutes of sleep.

Sensuality

Deep red inspires passion. It helps awaken the libido. Use it to move you through inhibitions and emotional blocks that prevent you from expressing yourself. It will remind you to live life fully and to love your body. Try a deep red…ottoman, lampshade, accent chair.

Rest

Aqua inspires trust. This is the colour to use when you need to relax. Wear or surround yourself with it if you have difficulty sleeping, dreaming, or meditating.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

Get Your Beauty Sleep

2

They say that an hour before midnight is worth three afterwards. That’s the age-old adage. But does it have any substance? Some people swear that sleep is the most powerful rejuvenating treatment of them all. And  apparently Penelope Cruz, Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zelwegger swear it keeps them beautiful. Beauty sleep is real, it’s free, and when you skimp on sleep, it shows on your face.

p

Tired skin sags, bags, and loses its luster. From 8pm to 11pm is the time for hydration and stimulation, while 11pm to 3am is the time for nutrition and regeneration, and 3am to 5am is the time for resting. While you sleep, your skin renews itself and new skin cells grow and replace older cells, repairing and restoring and rebalancing. It’s also a time when all sorts of hormonal and metabolic changes happen in and the body, including your skin, so it’s time to remember that a lack of sleep can disrupt those processes.

Untitled

Seven or eight hours of sleep is ideal for most of us. More than that can mean we wake up looking puffy and feeling sluggish. Of course, very few adults are in bed at 8pm and, as the hormone that triggers sleep – melatonin – peaks at around 11pm, this is the time we should naturally get tired.

rt

Not enough oxygen in your bedroom affects blood flow to the skin, causing puffiness. Make sure the room is not too warm – switch off the heating, and open a window. And also having a comfortable bed and good bedlinen always helps.
